On May 21, 2025, IndiGo flight 6E2142 from Delhi to Srinagar encountered severe turbulence due to a sudden hailstorm during its descent. The aircraft’s nose cone sustained significant damage, prompting the pilot to declare an emergency. Despite the challenging conditions, the Airbus A321 landed safely at Srinagar Airport at approximately 6:30 PM IST, with all 227 passengers and crew unharmed .

Passengers described the experience as terrifying. Videos from inside the cabin showed the aircraft shaking violently, with hailstones striking the fuselage and overhead bins rattling. Some passengers were seen crying and praying during the ordeal . Among those on board was a delegation from the Trinamool Congress, including Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose, who referred to the incident as a “near-death experience” .

IndiGo issued a statement confirming that the flight crew followed established protocols and that the aircraft landed safely. The airline’s ground team attended to passengers upon arrival, prioritizing their well-being. The aircraft has been grounded in Srinagar for inspection and maintenance before it can resume operations .
