The Indian Army is embracing cutting-edge robotics to bolster its operational capabilities, aiming to enhance soldier safety and efficiency across diverse terrains and missions.

Robotic Mules: Revolutionizing Logistics and Surveillance

In a significant move towards modernization, the Army has inducted 100 robotic mules, known as Multi-Utility Legged Equipment (MULEs). These quadrupedal robots are engineered to navigate challenging terrains, including steep hills and stairs, and can operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to +55°C. Each unit can carry a payload of up to 15 kilograms, making them invaluable for transporting supplies in high-altitude and remote areas where traditional vehicles struggle. Equipped with advanced sensors and cameras, MULEs also enhance surveillance capabilities without exposing soldiers to unnecessary risks .

Humanoid Robots: A Leap Towards Autonomous Operations

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing a humanoid robot designed for complex military tasks. This robot features a lightweight upper body with 24 degrees of freedom, enabling it to perform actions like gripping, opening doors, and handling hazardous materials. With audiovisual perception and real-time navigation capabilities, it’s tailored for operations in unstructured terrains. The project aims to reduce soldiers’ exposure to high-risk scenarios, with full development expected by 2027 .

Robotic Artillery: Enhancing Firepower with Automation

In a notable advancement, DRDO successfully tested a robotic mounted gun system at the Pokhran firing range. This system, featuring a 155×52 caliber artillery mounted on an armored truck, can autonomously load and fire ammunition. Such automation not only increases firing efficiency but also allows for rapid repositioning, reducing vulnerability to enemy counterattacks .

During the 77th Army Day celebrations in Pune, the Indian Army showcased robotic dogs, highlighting its commitment to integrating advanced technology into its ranks. These robotic canines, capable of navigating complex terrains and performing surveillance tasks, symbolize the Army’s forward-looking approach to modern warfare .
