On May 14, 2025, the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of India’s sixth semiconductor manufacturing unit, a ₹3,706 crore project in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. This significant infrastructure development will be undertaken through a joint venture between HCL Technologies and Taiwan’s Foxconn, marking a major step in boosting India’s semiconductor capabilities.

Key Highlights:

  • Strategic Location: The plant will be situated near the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar, within the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region.
  • Production Capacity: Designed to handle 20,000 wafers per month, the facility aims to produce 36 million display driver chips monthly. These chips are essential components for devices such as mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and personal computers.
  • Investment and Incentives: The total investment for the project is ₹3,706 crore, with approximately ₹1,500 crore expected from government incentives under the India Semiconductor Mission.
  • Timeline: Commercial production at the facility is anticipated to commence in 2027.

Significance:

This development is part of India’s broader initiative to bolster its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities under the India Semiconductor Mission. The mission aims to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen the country’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain. With this sixth unit, India moves forward in its journey to develop the strategically vital semiconductor industry.

The HCL-Foxconn collaboration combines HCL’s extensive experience in hardware development and manufacturing with Foxconn’s global expertise in electronics manufacturing. This partnership is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing India’s semiconductor ecosystem and fostering technological self-reliance.

The establishment of the semiconductor plant near Jewar Airport is anticipated to generate employment opportunities, stimulate regional economic growth, and contribute to the nation’s vision of becoming a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing.
