At the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, scheduled for June 15–17, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate as a guest. This move follows significant advocacy from the other six G7 nations, collectively known as the G6, emphasizing India’s growing geopolitical and economic significance on the global stage.
Vina Nadjibulla, Vice President of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, highlighted the strong push from the G6 countries to include India in the discussions. Despite initial reservations, Canada recognized India’s influential role and could not overlook Prime Minister Modi’s presence at the summit.
The inclusion of India reflects a broader trend of the G7 engaging more closely with prominent non-member nations to address global challenges. India’s participation is particularly significant for enhancing internet connectivity in remote and underserved regions, where traditional infrastructure is lacking.

This development also comes amid efforts to repair bilateral ties between India and Canada, which have been strained over the past two years. Tensions escalated after Canada accused India of involvement in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader and interference in Canadian elections, leading to the expulsion of diplomats by both nations. However, the invitation to Prime Minister Modi signifies a step towards mending relations and acknowledges India’s central role in global economic and strategic affairs.
Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the invitation and expressed a commitment to work collaboratively with Canada based on mutual respect and shared interests. This engagement at the G7 Summit is poised to play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide and fostering international cooperation on pressing global issues.
